Baby Registry-All you need to know about cloth diapering

07.13.10

At Franklin Goose we are so happy that you have decided to choose organic and natural products for you and your new baby.  We are also very honored that you have chosen Franklin Goose for all of your organic and natural needs.  We have compiled a list of cloth diapering essentials that you will need to get started.

Before looking into cloth and the accessories needed you will need to understand some of the terms of cloth diapering.  It is very easy to become overwhelmed with all of the cloth diapering jargon out there, so here are a few cloth diapering essentials that we have explained for you to help you choose the best option for you and your little one.

Prefolds are very popular because you can fold and shape them for the best fit possible.  A prefold is a flat diaper that is rectangular in shape and has many different layers of fabric in the “wet zone”.  You can find these in different sizes, colors, as well as in different absorbencies.  Some prefold sizes are determined by the actual size, a color, or in some cases by the different colors of the stitching.  There are prefolds made that are bleached (white in color), as well as prefolds made that are unbleached (natural in color).  Prefolds do require many washes before you can use them.  In most cases you will need to wash them 4 , or 5 times to get them to fluff up and be at their peak absorbency.  Using prefolds also requires you to use a snappy, or diaper pin, because they do NOT have a fastener built into the diaper.  Prefolds are NOT waterproof so they do require a cover of some sort.

All-In-One (AIO) diapers are very popular as well, because they are made with a cover and a fastener built into the diaper.  They have an absorbent lining, as well as a waterproof layer on the outside usually consisting of PUL.  These diapers come in many different prints, colors and also come with a velcro (hook and loop/aplix), or a form of snapping closure.

Fitteds – Fitted diapers are similar to a prefold, because they do require a cover and some come without closures built in.  Fitted diapers are a shaped diaper and come in many different prints, colors and closures.  You can find fitted diapers that have snaps, velcro/aplix, without a fastener at all that would require a snappy or diaper pins.  Fitteds like prefolds come in many different fabrics as well.  The softer the better!

Pocket diapers are similar to an all-in-one diaper, because they come made with an outer layer of PUL that is waterproof.  The inner part of this diaper is usually comprised of fleece and it comes with a “pocket” built into the back of the diaper that you can stuff a desired layer of absorbent inserts into.  These diapers also come with a Velcro/aplix, or a snapping closure that would not require a snappy or set of diaper pins.

Doublers/Liners  – Strips of fabric used to increase absorbency of a cloth diaper.  These can be used with any type of cloth diaper for extra wicking such as nap times or nighttime.

The diapers mentioned that do not have a layer of PUL on the outside to prevent leaking will need a cover.  Covers are a waterproof fabric that can come equipped with either snaps or velcro/aplix.  There are also diaper cover wraps as well as pull on covers made from waterproof fabric, such as fleece or wool.

Snappis are a separate accessory that you will need if you decide to choose a diaper that does NOT have a built in fastener.  Snappis are made of a rubber that have teeth on either end that stretches across the front of the diaper and attaches the wings of the diaper together.

Katydid Diapers is working with us to give away a melon colored diaper! Please include a link to your favorite diaper on our site and tell us why you love it to enter! Please remember to do this in order for your entry to count! This giveaway will end on Thursday at 5:00.

Seriously this is my favourite diaper on your site lol. I would love to win another… I love it because it is so soft inside and my kids have sensitive skin. I also like the option to snap onto itself after you take it off. It fits my son very well too and managed to keep him rash free at night.

I just got my Flip individual from you yesterday (super-fast shipping, by the way!), but I already love it! It fits great like the Bumgenius 3.0, but I love that I can use it with the Flip insert or as a cover over our flats. Amazing!

These are actually my favorite on your site. I use BG’s too but they aren’t on here anymore. I have 6 Katydids and love them. http://www.franklingoose.com/products/Katydid-TM-One-Size-Pocket-Diaper

This is the only one of your diapers (so far) that I have. I do like it, but I wish it wasn’t fleece inside. I use mostly prefolds so the fleece has gotten quite pilly. :-( However, I just won a Flip diaper from the Cloth Diaper Blog and I’m excited to try it!

The fuzzibunz perfect size are my FAVORITE. They’ve lasted through 3 kids so far, with plenty of wear left! I love the pocket diaper, easily stuffed and the snaps are great! Velcro scares me… my babies like to take them off!

The Thirsties Duos are my favorite! I like the fit and the leg gussets to contain messes. The pass through pocket makes for easy stuffing and laundering You don’t have to remove the soaker, it just wiggles free in the wash. The duo layer soaker is also great, hemp and microfiber make for great absorbancy. My aplix has held up well, unlike other brands, though I would like a snap option for older babies.

We love our FuzziBunz Perfect Size Diapers. DS is in a Medium right now, I’m guessing they’ll last through potty training as he is a skinny toddler and already starting to potty learn.

these are my favorites – i purchased ours used and they’ve made it through 2 kids and hopefully I’ll get a little more use out of them with baby 3 on the way :) we have tons of diapers and I’m looking to streamline our stash to make diaper laundry day a bit easier… I’ve wanted to try a katydid for a while and this color is GLORIOUS!

You used to carry Rump-A-Rooz, which we love, but we also love love love the Fuzzi Bunz one size diaper. I love that it doesn’t have all the snaps to adjust it in the front, but uses the side elastics instead.

  28. Laura Cooper says on :

My favorite diaper/diapering thing on FG’s site is the always bulletproof Thirsties covers! http://www.franklingoose.com/products/Thirsties-Diaper-Covers That counts, right? These are the best workhorse covers I have tried in 3 years of active CD’ing!

  29. Cailea Matusewic says on :

A friend talked me into trying one of her flip diapers and it has won me over. Its easier than the pocket diapers which is what I had used previously (didn’t make me want to continue with CD’ing), they’re cute and they don’t leak!

FuzziBunz are my all time favorite diapering system. I love their ease of use, and they are bullet proof for us. We are pocket diaper uses all the way and I would love the opportunity to see how Katydid diapers would work for us.

  31. Allison Veinot says on :

I only have one Katydid but it’s always the first one I pick to put on my baby after I do the wash! I love how trim it is, fits her like a glove and looks oh so cute! Would love a bunch more! If only I’d found this diaper first!

We’ve come to love Grobaby/Grovia as it’s one of the few diapers we’ve been able to get a good fit with. Was not a favourite during the EBF stage, but now that we’re past that, they’ve been great!

  33. Jane Frank says on :

I love the ease of FuzziBunz snaps — no messing around with velcro for the perfect fit!

It’s a tie between GroVia and Katydid
    http://www.franklingoose.com/products/GroBaby-Shell-

    and

    http://www.franklingoose.com/products/Katydid-TM-One-Size-Pocket-Diaper
The GroVia is great for a hybrid, and Katydid is honest to goodness the softest thing I’ve ever felt and SUPER absorbant. I just started CDing and so far, these are my favs :)

  35. Tomoko says on :

    http://www.franklingoose.com/products/Flip-Individual

Flip with organic cotton insert is really absorbent!
You can reuse the cover more than once, and that’s a huge plus as well.
